Tau Beta Sigma Frequently Asked Questions

Are you interested in joining Tau Beta Sigma?
Making a commitment like this may sound intimidating, and you probably have many questions! See if what you’
re looking for is answered below. If it’s not, please fill out the contact form on our website or email us at ksutbsigma@gmail.com!

1. What exactly is Tau Beta Sigma?

~When many people hear about a sorority, they think a bunch of girls in cute t-shirts with dances and philanthropy events. While we do pride ourselves in making fun shirts, we are a bit different. Tau Beta Sigma is a band service organization; our main duty is serving the bands of Kennesaw State University. In the Fall Semester, we serve as the band parents for “The Marching Owls”; we do whatever our Directors need to be done. In the Spring, we continue serving the concert ensembles, as well as work more in the community. We go to nursing homes, help Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts earn their music badges, and participate in other service events throughout the Kennesaw, Cobb County, and Greater Atlanta area.

2. Wow, that sounds like a lot. What is the time commitment when you become a Sister of Tau Beta Sigma?
~It’s actually not that much! We typically meet week in the Fall and every other week in the Spring for about an hour. This time is spent discussing new ideas and logistics within the chapter. You’ll also serve on a committee, where big ideas are crafted and brought back to the chapter. In addition to meetings, each member is required to attend all official service events and official social events organized each semester.

3. I keep hearing “Sister” and “sorority”… Is TBS only for girls?
~NO!!!! Tau Beta Sigma is co-ed, meaning that we include both boys and girls! We would love to have anyone that loves band and has a servant heart!

4. Sororities often have high financial obligations. How much does it cost to be in TBS?
~When you become a new member, the National fee is $110. This includes your pins, certificate, and membership card. After that, each academic year there is a National fee of $100. In addition to this, we have Chapter dues that are to be paid
once per academic year. This changes based on the financial state of the chapter and what events we have planned, but the fee amount will NEVER exceed $75.

5. What qualifications do I have to meet in order to become a member?
~First and foremost, you must be enrolled in a band ensemble. This includes concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and marching band. If you’re in color guard, you can definitely join as long as you are in marching band in the fall! There are a few other requirements as well, including being in good academic and disciplinary standing within the university.

6. Are there any opportunities to meet the current Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma?
~Yes! At the beginning of the Fall semester, we hold an Interest Week during the first week of classes. These events are not required, but they are certainly recommended so that you can meet the Sisters, hear about what TBS means to them, and find out ways you can be involved. In addition to this, we’re always around setting up and breaking down for rehearsals, and there is always at least one of us inside the Music Building almost every day! We also post any events we have on OwlLife, so make sure you follow us!

7. Speaking of follow you, does the Iota Psi Chapter have any social media pages?
~We’re glad you asked! You can follow us on Facebook and Instragram, as well as stay connected on our website!
